Abstract

The essays compiled in this thesis seek to explore the complexity of faith and family, while attempting to reconcile the two. They take a raw look at mental illness and the aftermath, while investigating what it means to recover, and the messiness and ugliness that often accompanies recovery. The two essays do this by looking both at recent events in the narrator’s life—hospitalization, a trip to Rome to reconnect with family—and glimpses into the past, all serving to come to terms with what it means to grapple with illness and search for faith.
