Abstract
Funding from the ACS-PRF will allow for the preparation of a new class of donor/acceptor molecules linked by 1,3-diethynylbicyclo[1.1.1]pentane spacers. These molecules will provide an interesting probe of nonclassical conjugation through the bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane (propellane) unit. We plan to use UV/vis and fluorescence spectroscopy to study the interaction between donor and acceptor groups through the 1,3-diethynylbicyclo[1.1.1]-pentane spacer. Charge transfer from donor to acceptor is believed to arise from through-bond conjugation (pi-sigma-pi) mediated by the propellane unit. These molecules are expected to exhibit substantial charge transfer upon photoexcitation. The molecules may find potential applications in molecular electronics, optics, and energy transfer.
