Abstract
In this interactive session, participants examined how female characters in SyFy cult classics (e.g. Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Dollhouse), recent films (Melancholia), and young adult literature (Beneath a Meth Moon; Make Lemonade) can disrupt gender stereotypes typically found in classic literature. Attendees learned strategies to incorporate media and YA lit to help students strengthen literary analysis skills (as required by the Common Core State Standards and college humanities courses).
