Abstract
The saying goes: “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” However, you can salt the oats. Differentiating homework and other assignments is an easy way to meet students where they are, challenge, and still meet standards. Based on Carol Ann Tomlinson's work on differentiating instruction and the presenter’s work with undergraduate students, education students at NMU have been modify homework and assignments for students across the spectrum for the past five to seven years. Combining some of Tomlinson's (2006) ideas for a compelling curriculum and Jackson's (2011) strategies for motivating reluctant learners there are many ways to create assignments that meet students where they are, challenge, and meet standards.
