Dr. Heidi Stevenson earned her B.S. in English from Northern Michigan University in 1999, her M.A. in English from NMU with a dual emphasis on creative writing and literature in 2001, and her Ph. D. in composition and rhetoric from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2010. Throughout her graduate studies and continued scholarship, her areas of interest have included flash fiction and creative nonfiction, service learning with a focus on rural service learning, ecological theories of composition, and recently, the effects of meditative movement on writing processes and the role of research in college undergraduate coursework. She began her career in education as a teaching assistant at NMU in 1999, and has since taught a variety of courses for the English Department and School of Health and Human Performance at NMU and the English Department at IUP. The scholarship she has presented at state and national conferences has focused on critical pedagogy, ecocomposition, service learning, and textbook use in the composition classroom. She has contributed entries to the Encyclopedia of Activism and Social Justice and has also written various pieces for local publications.
