Editorial Board Responsibilities -- 2026

Social Development Issues (SDI: ISSN 0147-1473, eISSN 2372-014X) is an international refereed journal that serves as a forum for achieving linkages between multiple disciplines, nations and cultures. SDI is committed to the advancement of social development, social work, and related disciplines. The journal's purpose in social development is the promotion and consideration of issues that affect social justice and the development and well-being of individuals and their communities. The journal seeks to publish scholarship that addresses social, cultural, political, and economic issues and their interrelationships in the global context. This includes theory, policy, practice, and research, as well as manuscripts that involve participatory action, organizing, locality development, and social change.

Social Development Issues (SDI) is sponsored by the International Consortium for Social Development (ICSD). First published in 1977, SDI has been continuously in publication ever since. It is published three times a year in spring, summer, and fall. SDI is an open-access academic journal that offers free reading and professional use to download, copy, disseminate and link to its published articles with due acknowledgements. To accomplish its mission, Social Development Issue solicits timely anonymous reviews from at least two international experts in the topics addressed. Reviewers are expected to write constructive evaluative reviews that provide authors with insight into the strengths of the manuscript as well as provide detailed comments and specific recommendations for improvement. It is critical that all reviews are completed in a timely fashion and with a clear rationale for the disposition of the manuscript recommended by peer reviewers. A format and checklist are provided to assist reviewers.

Members of the Editorial Board are appointed for a minimum period of two years. Depending on the number of manuscripts submitted for review and the specific topics of submitted papers, SDI will usually send no more than three (3) manuscripts per year for review. Reviewers are asked to complete their reviews within a 6 week period so that authors can receive timely feedback on their work and production schedules can be met.

The responsibilities of the Editorial Board are:

  • Aid in the editorial review process by reviewing in a timely manner a limited number of manuscripts per year within their areas of expertise;
  • Suggest other potential authors who may be solicited for publication;
  • Recommend ideas for thematic issues and journal development; and
  • Support the interests and work of the International Consortium for Social Development (ICSD), the professional association that sponsors Social Development Issues.
