Abstract
RAISED IN A SHOCKWAVE is a Young Adult Science Fiction novel centering around a young girl who joins a mutual aid organization focused on creating a network of community and support for a newly-birthed group of superhumans. The themes of the book include the importance of forming bonds across marginalized communities, the creation of the self as a self-made, joyful exercise in horror, and the deconstruction and examination of superhero stories as a genre. The book is preceded by an analysis of the DC Comics cartoon Static Shock, one of my chief influences for this project. This analysis is focused on the ways the show handles ideas around marginalization, inhuman bodies, and heroic infrastructure.
