Abstract

This service learning project provides high school students at Nah Tah Wahsh Public School Academy (Hannahville School) with meaningful learning experiences through a field trip to a dramatic performance of a literary text. Prospective teachers in NMU’s English Education program in Dr. Kia Jane Richmond’s English 350 Methods class will tie the performance to literature lessons based on Common Core State Standards curriculum and will participate in web-based writing exchanges with students in grades 9-12 about writing, literature, and performance arts. Our goal is to enhance the English curriculum while encouraging at-risk students to appreciate literature/performance arts, to improve writing skills, and to consider attending college
